How To Choose A Lawn Care Company

Posted by: Nick DiBenedetto on June 5, 2020

You have decided to bring in a lawn care company to fertilize and care for your lawn in the North Shore and you think you found the one you want.  Well, here are some things you want to be sure to consider before you hire them.

Services

The first tip is to confirm the company you are considering for hire performs the services you need. There is often confusion between a lawn care company and a landscaping business. Landscaping companies usually handle the lawn maintenance services like mowing lawns but will sub-contract the lawn care business to someone else, someone you haven’t screened to hire and will usually just put down the same products you could buy yourself at your local home and garden store.

Ideally you will have one company handle the landscaping and a different lawn care service handle the fertilization and weed control.

Contracts

Does the company you are hiring offer contracts for the services you are purchasing?  Will they specify in writing how many visits and the cost per visit?  Is there a discount for paying in full at the time of purchase?  If you don’t pre-pay, how long do you have to pay after a service?  What about renewals?  Does it renew automatically year after year?  If you are not happy with the service, what is the cancellation policy?  Is there an extra fee for between-services weed treatment visits?

Communication

Will this company contact you before each visit?  What information will you receive after your visits?  Are the technicians going to knock on the door before they begin the treatment application?  Will you have the same technician for every application? Do they have a dedicated customer service team?

Check Their Reputation

Are they a small business unable to adequately service their residential customers for the long term? Do they have complaints from previous or existing customers that haven’t been resolved? Are they a professional lawn care company or someone with a truck who just went out and bought a spreader and some fertilizer?

Everyone has a social media presence and companies also have websites where they can highlight their customer reviews.  But don’t forget the good old Better Business Bureau.  Folks can register complaints and compliments with them, and they have their own website, bbb.org.
